Claude Ultra vs Max: Price, Limits and API Credits
Claude Max costs $100 and Ultra $200 monthly. Compare verified-account five-hour limits, weekly usage, API credits and Claude Code billing.
Claude's top individual subscriptions have new names and one important change to their usage limits. The old Max 5x plan is now Max, costing $100 a month on the web. Max 20x has become Ultra at $200 a month. Anthropic says existing Max 20x subscribers move automatically with no price change. For verified Ultra accounts, the rolling five-hour session limit is removed—but weekly limits still apply.
The practical decision is not whether Ultra is 'unlimited.' It is whether a five-hour pause disrupts your work, how much weekly capacity you need, and whether you will actually use the separate Claude Platform API credits included in both plans. Anthropic's current pricing and help pages answer those questions more precisely than the old 20x label.
Claude Max vs Ultra: current prices and limits
Individual web subscriptions, checked November 2, 2026
| Feature | Max | Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $100/month | $200/month |
| Five-hour usage | 5x Pro every five hours | No five-hour limit for verified accounts; temporary limit otherwise |
| Weekly usage | 5x Pro | 10x Pro |
| Monthly API credits | $100 | $200 |
| Claude Code | Included, shared usage limits | Included, shared usage limits |
| Fable | Separate allowance, up to half weekly limit | Separate allowance, up to half weekly limit |
These multipliers are relative to Pro, not fixed numbers of tokens or tasks. Actual usage depends on the selected model, length of conversations and files. Anthropic may also apply additional capacity controls. The advertised prices are for subscriptions purchased on the web, exclude applicable tax, and may differ from app-store billing. Both premium individual plans are monthly subscriptions.
What happens to the five-hour limit?
A verified Ultra account can continue working through a long session without waiting for the usual five-hour window to reset. The general weekly allowance remains 10 times Pro, and Fable has a separate weekly allowance. This matters for developers using Claude Code throughout a working day: removing the session barrier does not remove the weekly budget, nor does it guarantee uninterrupted service.
- Open Claude and navigate to Settings > Usage on your Ultra account.
- Check for a Current session bar. Anthropic says that if the bar is absent, your account has been verified for the no-five-hour-limit benefit.
- If the bar remains, expect a temporary five-hour limit until Anthropic automatically verifies your account. It gives no universal completion date.
- Do not confuse phone verification at checkout with Ultra account verification, which Anthropic bases on account and payment history.
Why the monthly API credits do not pay for Claude Code
Max includes $100 in monthly Claude Platform API credits and Ultra includes $200. These credits can fund eligible Claude API calls, Console Playground usage, Claude Managed Agents and Agent SDK work billed through a linked Claude Console organization. They do not pay for interactive Claude Code sessions, extra usage in Claude chat or additional Claude Cowork work. Subscription usage and API organization billing are separate.
An Ultra subscription is not $200 of extra interactive Claude Code usage. The $200 API credit is for eligible usage through a linked Claude Console organization; it does not raise your Claude app or Claude Code subscription limits.
Anthropic says new eligible Max or Ultra subscribers can claim their monthly API credit after seven days on the plan. In Claude on the web, open Settings > Billing and link a Console organization. You can link only one organization, and changing that link requires support. Credits refresh each billing cycle and do not roll over. When API credit runs out, API requests stop unless other purchased credits or auto-reload are available.
Which plan should you choose?
- Stay with Pro if Claude is an occasional research, writing or coding assistant and you rarely exhaust its allowance. The monthly web price is $20, far below Max or Ultra.
- Choose Max if you need higher capacity but can tolerate the five-hour resets. Its weekly allowance is five times Pro, and it costs half as much as Ultra.
- Consider Ultra if session resets repeatedly interrupt long coding or professional tasks, or you need more weekly capacity. The five-hour benefit requires automatic account verification.
- Count API credits as value only when you run separate Claude Platform API workloads. They are not a substitute for interactive Claude Code or Claude chat usage.
Avoid surprise charges when switching plans
- Check whether you actually hit the five-hour limit, the general weekly limit or the separate Fable limit in Settings > Usage.
- Confirm your checkout price and billing channel. Anthropic's $100 and $200 list prices are web prices; mobile subscriptions can differ.
- If you need API credits, verify the seven-day eligibility rule and link the correct Console organization; unused credits expire.
- When using Claude Code, check whether an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set. Anthropic warns that it can make Claude Code use separately billed API authentication instead of your subscription.
The useful upgrade calculation is time saved from fewer interruptions versus the additional $100 monthly web price. Max is already a substantial step up from Pro. Ultra makes sense for heavier users, but only after checking the actual weekly allowance, verification state and the difference between subscription usage and API billing. Neither plan guarantees a fixed number of completed projects.
Questions people ask
Is Claude Ultra unlimited now?
No. Verified Ultra accounts no longer have a rolling five-hour session limit, but the general weekly allowance is still 10 times Pro. Fable has a separate weekly limit, and Anthropic may apply other capacity controls. Accounts awaiting automatic Ultra verification can still have a temporary five-hour limit. The absence of a session limit should not be interpreted as unlimited Claude or Claude Code usage.
Does my old Claude Max 20x plan automatically become Ultra?
Yes. Anthropic's Ultra Help Center says Max 20x is now called Ultra and existing subscribers move automatically without a price change. The web price remains $200 per month. The weekly allowance is still limited, while the five-hour cap is removed for verified Ultra accounts. If you subscribed through a mobile app store, check your own billing details because app-store prices can differ.
Can Ultra's $200 monthly API credits pay for Claude Code?
Not for interactive Claude Code sessions or extra usage in Claude, Claude Code or Cowork. The included monthly credits are for eligible Claude Platform activity billed through a linked Console organization, such as API calls and Agent SDK work using that organization's API key. New eligible subscribers can claim after seven days. Unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle.
How do I check whether my Claude Ultra account is verified?
Open Claude and go to Settings > Usage. Anthropic says a verified Ultra account will not show a Current session bar. If that bar is still visible, a temporary five-hour limit can apply until automatic verification completes. Verification uses account and payment history; verifying your phone number during checkout is a separate step and does not remove the usage limit.
Max is $100 a month on the web with five-hour and weekly limits; Ultra is $200 with no five-hour cap for verified accounts but still has weekly limits. Both include separate API credits that do not cover interactive Claude Code or extra Claude app usage. Compare your real interruption frequency and billing needs before upgrading.
